I was brought on to this shoot by Little Spark Strategy as part of a repositioning of the brand and a re-launch of their website.
Savernake make some exceptional knives. Their Wiltshire workshop is home to some incredibly dedicated craftspeople who are going beyond what’s expected on a daily basis. Blending cutting edge (pun intended) machining and hand finishing to make sure that the best process for each task is the one that’s used.
The thing that struck me most on my time in the workshop was the pleasure that each member there displayed in their work. I’ve photographed a lot of workplaces, and more often than not, I have to pull a few tricks out of the bag to create a moment where someone looks content in their job for the brief second the shutter clicks. The Savernake artisans made my job very easy in this regard.
We also conducted a shoot in a kitchen setting to show the knives doing what they do best, and blimey these things are sharp. For all of these shoots we were running stills and motion in parallel so that created a challenge for the set-up as I’d normally light quite differently for these two mediums. Not having the big strobes to lean on meant falling back to a more shallow depth of field than I’ve been used to lately, but I think that worked thematically for the look we wanted to achieve and we built that into our planning as a result.
